Working Toward Zero Waste
We proudly support the sustainability goals of UPIKE. Here are a few active initiatives.
Robust Recycling
We recycle cardboard, metal, paper, glass, and accepted plastic products, and we recycle uncommon items—such as batteries and printer cartridges—wherever possible.
Collaborative Composting
We work with campus organizations to collect organic materials—including food waste and compostable service items such as napkins and wooden stir sticks—to be composted into useable, nutrient-rich soil amendments.
Proactive Prevention
We use tracking and forecasting tools to proactively identify food waste trends in order to alter our preparation accordingly.
Showcasing Our Local Partner Relationships
UPike Dining sources food from many local farmers, growers, and distributors. Our partners change throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability.
Kentucky Proud Products
We prioritize sourcing products that are made right here in Kentucky. Supporting local & sourcing local are one of our priorities when it comes to our campus dining hall. Look for the Kentucky Proud insignia on our menu screens to see what products were sourced locally!

Appalachian Proud Products encompass Kentucky & the entire Appalachian area. We prioritize sourcing local product from our region to serve our campus community. Look for the Appalachian Proud insignia next to menu items on our screens!
